 The Highs and Lows

The Pen y Fan and Corn Du trail offers spectacular, unrivalled views of the beautiful Welsh countryside in the Brecon Beacons National Park.

Pen y Fan is the highest mountain in South Wales, and a popular destination for walkers. Pen y Fan is translated from the Welsh language to mean ‘top of this place’.

The mountain and surrounding area are owned by the National Trust.

Pen y Fan, together with Corn Du (trans. Black Horn), it’s secondary summit, was previously named Cadair Arthur, meaning (King) Arthurs Chair.

Whilst there are no stories directly linking King Arthur to Pen y Fan, legend has it that Arthur once helped the people of Brecon with a group of wild boars.

The King killed the boars’ leader, whose body rolled down into the river, today known as Afon Twrch (river of the boar).

At Fauna, we greatly value time spent outdoors, we therefore chose to use a hike as our first adventure as a gym. We had an opportunity to get some of our members together for the first time out of the gym, and to mark the first month back open after lockdown.

With a bright and early start, we left for our adventure in convoy at 6am, arriving for our hike at 8 am. The hike itself was approximately 6.5km out and back, with 545 elevation gain. The hike was marked with clear paths to observe the beautiful views.

We walked in our groups up to the highest peak in Brecon Beacons, testing our fitness in a different capacity. The weather was thankfully on our side to enjoy the hike with no waterproofs and enjoy the views without too many grey clouds.

Saturday once again demonstrated the community and friendships we’ve created here at Fauna, and we cannot wait to get planning the next adventure as a gym.

Thank you to all of our members and non members that joined us, but if you didn’t don’t worry. Pen‑Y‑Fan was the first, and it certainly won’t be the last.
